Bright Future: Bian Kenny & Slave Mogutin, 2010
Charcoal on vellum with artist tape, mounted on walnut plywood
72 x 72"

L2009.228.1

For years Howell has been creating life-sized drawings, always working directly from life. Beginning with a 14 x 17" sheet of tracing paper, and taping additional sheets to the first, he expands his canvas as needed. Originally intended as a temporary adhesive, Howell discovered the multiple sheets of paper, visibly held together by tape, to symbolize the many facets of the individuals he draws, simultaneously allowing the spectator to see these subjects as more than the sum of their parts.

Bright Future, Howell's most recent and largest work, is the first in which the subjects are expressed as monumentally larger-than-life. These two well-known artists, (Slava Mogutin, left and Brian Kenny, right) partnered both personally and artistically, are drawn together, facing outward into the world, their very independent and combined energies creating a strong force for the future.
