Before Stonewall Before the advent of the modern LGBTQ political movement, homoeroticism was generally in the eye of the beholder. Even works that appealed directly to a homoerotic sensibility had to also pass muster within dominant culture, such that most queer art spoke out of both sides of its mouth, addressing two different audiences, and two different sensibilities, at once. But works that circulated in private were often notably frank, such as British artist Duncan Grant's explicitly erotic coupling.

After Stonewall In a context that aggressively prohibited erotic relationships between people of the same sex, it stands to reason that the representation of homoeroticism would become, in and of itself, a political act; at once a call for reform, a means of redress, and a spur to the formation of community. An overtly homoerotic art thus exploded into view around the time of the Stonewall riots, and the creation of images bearing an overt queer significance became part of this assertion of presence—and an implicit call to others to join the political movement.
