Jugga is the nom de plume for David Sawtell's homoerotic artwork. David is an Australian artist based in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. His homoerotic work is based on a mixture of real life models and fantasy. The subject matter revolves around representations of men from blue collar and rural backgrounds.
David was born in 1950 in a small western New South Wales timber-milling township. Although he had an interest in art from an early age, the combination of the premature death of his father after the family moved to Sydney, lack of educational opportunities and employment meant that he was not able to fully pursue his art until the early 1990's.
In the meantime David obtained a trade as a Fitter and Turner, married, relocated his young family from Sydney to Brisbane.
In 1991 he gave up full time employment as a foreman with an equipment hiring firm to commence a Bachelor of Visual Arts finishing in 1993. He has been subsequently employed by the University as a technician in the fine art workshop.
In 2000 David commenced a Masters of Visual Arts (studio based). The project involves the development of representations of homosexual men from blue collar and rural backgrounds with images that are intended to provide an alternative projection for those men who do not identify with or feel represented by the imagery of popular gay culture.
David is based in Brisbane, Queensland and has been happily partnered for the past three years.
