Jack Slomovits was born in 1969 and was raised in Los Angeles where he discovered photography at the age of six with his first camera, an Eastman Kodak "Brownie." He was encouraged by his parents to continue experimenting with his creative vices, when at age 13 they presented him with his first 35mm Nikon, his tool of trade today. He quickly moved from employing friends and family as subjects, to his school's yearbook committee, shooting local bands and becoming the official photographer for his local youth group chapter, a position which took him to New York, Israel and all over California. Throughout his high school and college years, he won photography, filmmaking and art awards, and received a scholarship to study at Parsons.
Jack moved to New York City in 1991 to study photography at Fordham University at Lincoln Center in a specialized independent studies program designed for him. He fine tuned his technical knowledge and learned the "trade" while working at a major New York film lab where he was exposed to the work of other artists in the medium. Jack's approach to "shooting from the hip" opened doors to experiment with his subjects beyond the boundaries of common photographic technique.
Jack currently freelances as a commercial and portrait photographer full time. He lives with his partner and works out of their West Village studio/apartment.
