Matthew Snow

I consider myself a classicist and place a great deal of emphasis on good craftmanship, i.e., solid drawing skills, stretching and priming my own canvases. When I entered art school in the mid 1960's these skills were no longer being taught in any organized way and it became clear to me that, in order to secure for myself a kind of formal training that I desired to have, I would have to set my own agenda.

I view painting as a form of communication, rather than self-expression, and my work can be divided into three categories: 1) landscapes and cityscapes, 2) still life, and 3) figurative paintings.

By exploring some of the themes that have informed Western Culture for over 2,000 years, and which were, at one time, thought to be the true and proper subject for the artist, I hope to come up with original images that will encapsulate in visual form some of the problems and dilemmas facing our society today.
